Not another production 44

A round-bilge steel hull built to Germanischer Lloyd survey is a different proposition from a moulded GRP cruiser turned out to a price.

The weight sits where it should: 4.6 tonnes of ballast under a heavy-displacement hull that carries its way through a seaway and looks after the people aboard.

She was built once, properly, by a yard working to a classification society — and a steel hull hides nothing behind a gelcoat.

Design & rig

The Madeira 44 is drawn as a proper passage-maker: a fractional rig that a couple can handle, over a hull with the displacement to keep going when the wind gets up.

  • 7/8 fractional rig with a large full-batten mainsail and a high-aspect jib — quick to trim, quick to reef.
  • A wider shroud base gives the mast better support and a calmer rig under load on a long passage.
  • Sail handling is sized for short-handed sailing: you do not need a full crew to get the best from her.

Below decks

Owner's cabin forward with a private heads and shower; a large, well-lit saloon; generous windows, hatches and ventilation throughout. The interior is joined in solid mahogany.

The wet area sits by the companionway, so the heads, chart table and galley are all within reach in foul-weather gear — the layout of a boat meant to be used offshore, not just admired at the dock.

Construction & certification

The hull is round-bilge steel, built under the supervision of Germanischer Lloyd and insulated with natural cork.

She carries CE and EURO 1 certification. Kept up, a steel hull of this kind gives decades of service — and unlike a cored GRP deck, what you see is what you have.
